Mayweather / Mosley: 24/7 worthy

Mayweather vs Mosley
When it was announced that the Shane Mosley vs. Floyd Mayweather welterweight title fight would be preceded by a 4 part installment of HBO's award winning documentary series 24/7, I was thrilled. When I learned that Manny Pacquiao's welterweight title fight against Joshua Clottey was not going to be receiving the same treatment, I was at least glad they decided to bring back the old HBO one episode Countdown show to hype the PPV (The Road to Dallas: Pacquiao vs. Clottey premieres this Saturday) and understood their decision not to roll out the 24/7 treatment.

Why? With all due respect to Joshua Clottey, a legitimate top 10 welterweight and former titleholder, outside of boxing circles he's really not that well known. The weight of the promotion for his fight is on the star power of Manny Pacquiao and it would be difficult to introduce Clottey to the American public at large because he speaks broken English and as evident on a Top Rank produced preview special, needs subtitles for English speaking audiences.

Also, to be truthful. Pacquiao and Clottey do not seem to have any real issues with each other that would make a 4 part series intriguing to watch and despite the fact that this could be a magnificent fight in the ring, It's still a fight no one ever asked for.

Mayweather vs. Mosley on the other hand is the complete opposite. Mayweather is a super star and Mosley is a well known figure to sports fans. Both men are good talkers and don't seem to like each other too much. A fact exemplified by the fact they nearly came to blows during a press conference in New York earlier this week.

While Mosley vs. Mayweather is still not the fight everyone was hoping for (that of course, would be Pacquiao vs. Mayweather), it's still a fight boxing fans have wanted for more than a decade dating back to when Mosley was the lightweight champion of the world and Mayweather the junior lightweight world champ.

So while I'm certainly curious about Pacquiao March 13th fight vs. Josh Clottey, I understand HBO's decision not to produce a 24/7 series for the bout. Mosley vs. Mayweather on the other hand is certainly 24/7 worthy and I can't wait to watch it.
