Shane Mosley: "The testing is a good thing to change our sport"
Mayweather vs Mosley
Pittsburgh Fight Sports Examiner | Scott Heritage
Recent statements from Shane Mosley revealed his thoughts on his upcoming fight against Floyd Mayweather, his tactics going into the fight and the intensive drug testing regime both are being subjected to.
Mosley having used steroids in the past was eager for the extra testing Mayweather demanded.
The reason being that no matter what taunts Mayweather could come up with to the contrary, Mosley could prove once and for all he is and has been completely clean since the incident.
"The drug testing has been thorough. They have come four times already and taken blood twice and urine twice. They just show up randomly to take it, but they come during normal hours. It's not like they are showing up in the middle of the night, and they haven't disrupted my training. In the end I think the testing is a good thing to change our sport."
The reason Mosley publicly supporting the testing protocol is important is that unlike Floyd Mayweather he is well liked and respected in the sport. Mayweather has his fans but outside that he is largely unpopular. Mosley while not a huge draw is much easier to relate to for many fans.
Mayweather bleating on about testing and $40 million dollar drug tests all by himself is irrelevant. He might be the face of the sport as he claims but few give much credence to what he comes out with most of the time. Even with his family backing him up, Mayweather by himself looks more like he's trying to prove a point to Manny Pacquiao rather than trying to clean up the sport.
With Mosley onside, Mayweather potentially has an ally who people will listen to with more of an open mind and without all of the usual trash talking that goes along with anything Mayweather says.
Whether Mosley is just paying lip service to the testing protocol for the sake of Golden Boy remains to be seen, and his stance after the fight will tell us more.
Derek, Pittsburgh: "The testing seems like a good idea, but who is getting tested and who isn't? All main event fighters or only when a belt is on the line?
I think Mosley is saying that all high profile fights should have extra testing. Obviously not every single fight card would have the extra testing, and there would have to be some kind of cut off point decided.
Stan, Harrisburg: "Isn't the testing just a way for Floyd to get back at Manny for not agreeing to his terms, does he really believe any of this stuff?"
It does seem strange he's waited until hes 33 to suddenly insist on the extra testing. He's had the name and influence for years to change things if he really wanted to. If he can make standard testing the norm though Mayweather will have achieved hi aims whatever they were. Either cleaning up the sport or just getting back at Manny Pacquiao.
