Expectations are High for Mayweather vs. Mosley this Weekend

The last time Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Shane Mosley were inside of the ring was back in September 19, 2009 after Mayweather’s tactical destruction of Juan Manuel Marquez. During Mayweather’s interview in the ring after the fight with Max Kellerman, Mosley abruptly jumped the ring and crashed Mayweather’s interview, challenging him to a future fight.

Mayweather was furious about the abrupt crashing of his victory party in the ring and told Mosley that he does interrupt him during his victory interviews and to respect him as a man. In between the grit and dirt in the ring was Bernard Hopkins who trying to tell Mayweather that Mayweather vs. Mosley is the real fight instead of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Hopkins was also telling Mosley to keep arguing with Mayweather because you are trying to get a fight. These actions were very uncharacteristic of Shane Mosley.

After the incident in the ring, Mayweather and his camp still made negotiations to fight Manny Pacquiao on March 13, 2010, which left Mosley to pursue other avenues. Mosley’s camp made negotiations to fight Andre Berto on January 30, 2010, but when the tragedy in Haiti happened on January 13, 2010, Haitian native Andre Berto lost eight of his family members in the earthquake. Unable to focus on his January 30 assignment against Shane Mosley, Berto pulled out of the fight, leaving Mosley once again out in the dark, wondering who he will fight next.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. was on a collision course with Manny Pacquiao in a mega fight on March 13, which many boxing experts said was the most anticipated fight of this decade. Mayweather, however, accused Pacquiao of using steroids and wanted Olympic style drug testing during both training camps leading up to the bout.

The Mayweather camp and Pacquiao camp could not come to an agreement on how the drug testing will be administered, so the showdown between the two fighters scheduled for Mach 13 was cancelled due to those circumstances. Another reason for the cancellation of the fight was because Mayweather would not apologize for his steroid remarks towards Manny Pacquiao, thus, leaving Mayweather without a fighter to dance with.

Now Mayweather does not have an opponent, Shane Mosley does not have an opponent, so the two sides decided to make negotiations for a showdown to fight each other on May 1, 2010. The mega fight extravaganza tip off with Mayweather and Mosley meeting one another on a HBO Boxing segment called “Faceoff” hosted by Max Kellerman. During the segment, things got a little heated between the fighters when Mosley accused Mayweather of wanting to be like him in the past.

During the training camp leading up to the fight, the Mayweather camp continued to bring up Mosley’s past of alleged steroid use, while Mosley’s camp continued to criticize Mayweather for the way he acts and his disgraceful love of money. Both fighters have excellent trainers in Roger Mayweather and Naasim Richardson who will have their fighter ready for the May 1 Mega fight.

This fight in my opinion is bigger than Mayweather vs. Pacquiao because Mosley may be the only fighter at 147 pounds that can actually hurt Floyd if he can catch him with something big, but with all the hype and trash talking; will this fight live up to its true billing? Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Shane Mosley are two fighters destined for the Boxing Hall of Fame. Mosley will try to pressure Mayweather in this fight and if he succeeds and forces Mayweather to fight him instead of just box, this fight will not only live up the hype, it can be the best fight of the year.
